I found this demo while clearing out some stuff. Thought I’d give it away. it’s the solo version of a song that will be on the album with Will, Rich and Jack playing on it.
Delighted to be included in Sweeping the Nation’s 14 for ‘14
At the end of November I played my second London Headline show. Darren Hayman and John Howard supported and we had a blast. Thanks to everyone who came.
Love Kills All Fear live at Strongroom Sessions 24/04/2013. Song will be on next year’s debut full-length.
Free mp3 of ‘No Use’ live at Strongroom Sessions in London last month. This features Jack Hayter on pedal steel and was originally released on The Gift last year. http://raleghlong.bandcamp.com/album/the-gift
The Gift is a collection of piano ballads. They emerged at a time when I was tired of the guitar, and so I really began to explore the craft of writing on the piano. It makes for different songs. At the same time I started hearing things differently, listening to artists like John Howard, and Bill Fay, and feeling different about the place of sentimentality in music. I wrote about this here. Without realising it, I’d carried with me an opposition of honesty and sentimentality. For this record I dropped that opposition.
You can’t tour a piano record in the U.K unless you’re very rich or very strong. U.K venues rarely have a piano just sitting around, unlike in the rest of Europe, where Steinways are a dime a dozen, and where I played a run of piano shows last year.
So I asked the best filmmakers I know to shoot an accompanying film for each song. Most of them didn’t get to hear the song, I just asked them to make any 3 minute idea they had been wanting to try. It’s an experiment in collision. These certainly aren’t pop promos, they’re accompanying films. I’m not in all of them wearing clothes and you wouldn’t see them on MTV even if this was a record of Pop Hits.
I’ll be posting outtakes, news and links here over the forthcoming weeks. Please share in anyway you can, and if you want to review the record or get involved then you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
